Douglas Rotary Club recognized an exceptional Wiregrass Georgia Technical College student and hosted a riveting presentation on the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks that profoundly affected the United States and the world.

Justin Taylor, a military veteran and welding graduate of Wiregrass shared how this college education, support from his employer Lowe’s in Douglas, and upcoming higher education plans will prepare him not only to be a welder but someday to be a business owner as well. Joining Justin at the recognition were Wiregrass staff Brandy Wilkes and welding instructor Jason Brewer, as well as Justin’s grandmother, Elizabeth Hayes. Rotary President Jim Cottingham recognized both Justin’s success and reflected on the joy of teaching Ms. Hayes during her nursing studies at South Georgia State College which helped set the stage for her successful career as a nurse.

Major Paul C. Elliott, U.S. Army (Retired) and pastor of First Methodist Church of Douglas, shared his memories of the events of 9/11/2001 and the military responses over the decades that followed to prevent future threats to national security.  Pastor Elliott is an active member of Douglas Rotary and other community organizations.

Douglas Rotary is a service organization seeking to advance the service ideals of Rotary International by investing time and resources in programs for children and youth, community development, disease prevention, family support, environmental health, and leadership development.

Rotary meets on Thursdays from noon to 1 pm at the South Georgia State College Dining Hall in Douglas. Visitors and prospective members who are interested in personal and professional growth and community service are always welcome. For more information, call Clay Lott at 912-327-1921 or Mark Miller at 540-321-8191.
