Coffee County woman arrested for alleged family violence incident involving backhanding a child

On Saturday, September 6, 2025, at approximately 8:42 p.m., deputies with the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report involving a juvenile in the Broxton area.

During the investigation, deputies determined that a verbal argument between a mother and her child escalated into a physical altercation. Abby Gail Fernandez told deputies that she indeed backhanded the minor; officers observed several pieces of jewelry on the hand in which Fernandez used that were consistent with the juvenile’s visible sustained injuries; that were also consistent with the statements provided to deputies on scene by the minor.

Based on evidence and witness accounts, Abby Gail Fernandez was arrested and charged with battery – family violence. The Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) has been notified, and the case remains under investigation. Fernandez was transported to the Coffee County Jail where she later bonded out.

The Coffee County Sheriff’s Office encourages anyone who may be experiencing family violence to seek help immediately. Victims or those aware of abuse can contact the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office at 912-384-4227 or reach out to the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233).
