Barbara was born and raised in Coffee County, GA. She attended Georgia Southern College, where she earned a master’s degree in Recreational Therapy. She worked at Grace Wood State School and Hospital. She later received an additional master’s degree in special education from Augusta College. She played a vital role in helping to bring the Special Olympic Program to Columbia County Schools. For the last 11 years, she worked in the First Baptist Church Weekday Education Program as a K-3 teacher.

Barbara had an enthusiasm and passion for helping others, regardless of the need or situation. She was always willing to take in a wayward teenager, provide a meal to someone in need, or help a family navigate the educational system for their child with special needs. She was a lifelong learner, with a passion for continuous discovery and exploring new things. She loved conducting fun science experiments and sharing her love of nature with her family and students. Barbara had a gift for turning everyday moments into educational moments. She was always up for an adventure. She loved a good road trip, and she had traveled to every one of the continental United States.

Barbara loved her family dearly. She was extremely proud of all her children and grandchildren and often spoke about them. She made every effort to be present for everything from a chorus concert to a sporting event to Parents’ Day in Oxford, MS.

She loved surprising her family with random things, whether it was their favorite drink, laundry detergent she bought on sale, or a SAM’s rotisserie chicken. She was loved by all who knew her. She left a lasting impression on anyone who met her and instantly became friends with them. Her most incredible legacy was that she loved Jesus and shared His love with her family and students. Her famous farewell phrase was “I love you, but Jesus loves you more.” She will be greatly missed, but we take comfort in knowing she is at peace with her Savior.

Family members include her children: Dockery Young (Jamilee Brown), Carla Parker (Bill), Allie Wall (David), and Emma Eve Corley (Zachary); grandchildren: Hazel, Will, Jacob, Martha, Charlie, and Warner; brothers: Karl Dockery, Jr. (Theresa) and Walter Dockery (Denise); sister: Martha Lou Royer (Chris); and numerous nieces and nephews.

The memorial service will be held Thursday, October 16, 2025 at 2:00 P.M. in Storey Chapel at First Baptist Church of Augusta. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 P.M., at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Special Olympics of Georgia at https://support.specialolympics.org/ or to Patty’s Playground for Adaptive Play Equipment at 3500 Walton Way Ext, Augusta, GA 30909.

Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Rd., Augusta, GA 30907 (706) 364-8484.
