Wiregrass Georgia Technical College announces the dedication of the Coffee Campus Meeting Room in memory and honor of Asa and Sue Whitfield, recognizing the generous endowment made to establish a scholarship fund benefiting students in Coffee County.
The newly dedicated meeting room, located in the Coffee Hall Building, serves as a gathering space for students, faculty, staff, and community patrons. Asa, who passed away in 2017, spent many years working and serving the Douglas community after relocating from California with Fleetwood. He later worked in sales for Ivan Allen and owned a local stationery business. Originally from Alabama, Asa attended Howard College in Birmingham on the GI Bill. Together, Asa and Sue shared a vision to make a lasting impact in Coffee County by helping students achieve their educational and career goals.
After Asa’s passing, Sue carried out their shared wishes by allowing the Foundation North Board of Trustees to create and manage the Asa & Sue Whitfield Scholarship Fund at Wiregrass. In recognition of this impactful gift, Wiregrass has named the Asa & Sue Whitfield Meeting Room on its Coffee Campus. A special reception was held on September 24 following the Wiregrass Foundation North Board meeting to honor Sue and celebrate the Whitfields’ legacy of generosity.
“We are incredibly grateful for this amazing gift and the generosity it represents,” shared Wiregrass President DeAnnia Clements. “This investment in our students and the dedication of our meeting room in his memory and in her honor reflect a shared commitment to education, access, and opportunity. This gift will have a lasting impact on the learning environment and success of our students for years to come.”
The Wiregrass Foundation North exists to support the mission of Wiregrass Georgia Technical College by funding innovative academic initiatives and ensuring access to quality education for all. With continued support from partners like the Whitfield family, Wiregrass remains committed to leading the way in workforce development through technical education, adult learning, and industry-specific training.
