Game one of the GIAA Class A state softball tournament went to the CCA Lady Patriots. CCA defeated the Westwood Academy Lady Wildcats 15-0 in three innings Thursday morning. The Lady Patriots will play again at 2 p.m. against the winner between Fullington and Crisp.
CCA jumped out to an insurmountable 11-0 lead in the first inning. The Lady Patriots were already up 7-0 when shortstop Emma Gourley launched a grand slam to center field. Arrabelle Roberts, Brilynn Waldron, and Cadence Cravey were on and trotted home with Gourley.
CCA came back and scored four more in the third. Mattie Lewis singled with the bases loaded to score Waldron and Cravey. The Lady Patriots loaded the bases again and Gracie Giddens ended the game via run rule with a single that scored Gourley and Lewis.
Gourley was 2-2 with a home run, six RBI, and three runs scored (she was also hit by a pitch). Lewis, Giddens and Peighton Harper each drove in two. Cravey also scored three runs.
Giddens threw a complete game one-hitter. She struck out five and didn’t walk anyone. She threw 36 pitches in three innings.
The Lady Patriots don’t get a long break. They take the field again at 2 p.m.
