Douglas Rotary Club helped sponsor the Satilla Riverkeeper’s “Roasting with our Riverkeeper” fundraiser, October 25th, at the Dover Bluff Club on the banks of the river in Camden County, Georgia. Douglas Rotarians attending the oyster roast and barbecue gathering along with their spouses were Rotary President and SRK Board Member Jim Cottingham, Milton Clements, Mark Miller and SRK co-founder Dr. Guy Moorman. Rotary District Governor Terry Adkins from Brunswick and Governor-elect Beverly Trainor from St. Simons came to celebrate Rotary’s longtime engagement with environmental stewardship.
Long-time SRK board member Dr. Clay Montague briefed the participants on the progress being made in the Noyes Cut Restoration Project. The third and final phase of the project is on track for completion in Spring 2026, ending a decades long effort to undo environmental damage to the river. Satilla Riverkeeper is a member-supported non-profit organization that serves to keep the Satilla River clean and healthy. Their mission is three-fold: restoration, protection, and education. They strive to keep every kind of pollutant out of the river: trash, chemical run-off, silt, non-native species, untreated sewage, and heavy metals.
Satilla Riverkeeper Shannon Gregory joined forces this Fall with concerned citizens of Coffee County in opposition to a proposed poultry operation that poses significant threats to the river and the quality of life to area residents. For more information, please visit www.satillariverkeeper.org.
