The City of Douglas is seeking youth volunteers for the 2026–2027 school year to participate in the Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council (DMYC) and the Douglas-Coffee County Teen Court. Both programs are designed to foster leadership, civic responsibility, and community involvement among local youth.
The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council serves as an advisory body to the Mayor and City Commission. Students selected for the council will take part in a variety of activities including orientation sessions, discussions on city issues, brainstorming ideas to engage youth in the community, leadership retreats, and travel experiences. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in grades 6 through 12, be between the ages of 14 and 19, and attend Coffee County High School, a private school, or be homeschooled within the city limits of Douglas. Nominations may be submitted by school principals, counselors, the mayor, or city commissioners. The council will consist of at least nine members who may serve one or more terms. Members are required to attend a mandatory orientation and follow a planned schedule of events. Meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at 5:00 PM in the Commission Chambers at City Hall and typically last about one hour.
The Douglas-Coffee County Teen Court is also accepting volunteers for the upcoming school year. This program offers students a unique opportunity to participate in a peer-led justice system that helps first-time youth offenders take responsibility for their actions. Interested students must be entering grades 6 through 12, be in good academic standing, and either live in or attend school within Douglas-Coffee County. Volunteers should be able to communicate effectively, work well with others, and maintain confidentiality. They must also be capable of treating each case with fairness and without bias. Selected students will be required to attend mandatory training, with the date to be announced. Volunteers must commit to serving for at least four months during the school year, attend all court sessions and trainings, and follow all Teen Court rules and procedures. Teen Court hearings are held on the first Saturday of each month at City Hall and last approximately two hours.
Applications for both programs will be accepted through February 1, 2026.
