A 21-year-old was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on December 17, 2025, after he allegedly pointed a gun at another individual during an argument on East Wilson Street.
According to an incident report from the Douglas Police Department, officers responded to an East Wilson Street address in reference to a threatening incident. The report states that Cesar Vargas, 21, went to the house with Yosimar Garcia to pick up Garcia’s daughter from Luis Mendez. Mendez and Garcia are married but separated; Vargas and Garcia are currently in a relationship, according to the report.
While at the house, Vargas and Mendez began arguing and Vargas pulled out a gun, the report states. Video of the incident shows Vargas holding both a 9mm handgun and an AK-47 rifle while standing in the road. The guns are held parallel to the ground as though he is pointing them at something, the report states. The report also says that Vargas attempted to shoot Mendez with the handgun but the gun wouldn’t fire. Witnesses stated that Vargas worked the slide of the pistol to get it to work but it never would shoot. Vargas denied pointing the guns at anyone and attempting to shoot Mendez. However, the report says that officers found an unfired 9mm round in the roadway near the location the incident took place.
After the incident, Vargas left the scene. A police officer saw his truck a few hours later and stopped him on Old Bell Lake Road. During the stop, Vargas stated that the day before, Mendez had come to Garcia’s house and attempted to break in. He added that Mendez threatened to kill Vargas. The report also states that Vargas and Garcia tried to get someone else to pick up the child but they couldn’t find anyone. In the report, Vargas initially stated that he only had the handgun out during the argument. He later said that he had the rifle out as well but he never raised the guns and had no intention of shooting anyone.
Vargas was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. He was transported to the Coffee County Jail and later released on a $7,500 property bond.
