George Washington Carver Freshman Campus FFA officers Dawson Adams (President), Catherine Tillery (VP), Savannah Cothern (Secretary), Katie Burch (Reporter), Emma Kate Tillman (Treasurer), Elizabeth Crews (Sentinel), Ronnie Griffis (Historian), Dalton McKinnon (Parliamentarian) and FFA Advisor/Agriculture Teacher, Spencer Highsmith, recently attended the 1st Annual South Region Leadership Rally held at the Agritourism Facility Raisin’ Canes in Valdosta. The purpose of the day leadership rally was a way to spark the interest in our FFA members and motivate them to get involved during the upcoming school year in career development events, local community service projects, and leadership conferences and conventions.

While attending the South Region Leadership Rally, members heard from speakers from Abraham Baldwin Agriculture College, University of Georgia – Tifton, State FFA Officer Angel Rewis, and State FFA Advisor, Mr. John “Chip” Bridges. Students also rotated through ten different leadership activities led by the Area 5, Area 6 and State FFA Officers. Through these activities, students learned communication, team working and leadership skills that will be used in our home George Washington Carver Freshman Campus FFA chapter.

“Students, we hope that you take the National FFA theme and amplify your school year this year in the FFA,” says Area 5 FFA President Brentley Odom.

During the South Region Leadership Rally, students also were able to compete in a variety of events that will help them know what they would like to compete in during the upcoming school year. These career clustered events included: Horticulture Plant Identification, Animal Science Identification, Global Positioning System Mapping Course, Heads Up Cutting Contest, an Opening and Closing Ceremonies Contest (formal meeting procedures), and an Advisor’s Challenge.

FFA is a national organization of over 501,000 members preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture.  FFA is an integral part of the agricultural education program in public schools. The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
