The Douglas Police Department’s first Citizen Police Academy is proving to be beneficial to participants as well as officers.  The program began in August and will continue on Thursday nights until graduation on October 3.

“The Citizen Police Academy is going great,” says Chief Gary Casteloes.  “Participants are inquisitive and have offered very helpful feedback.”

Since the class began, 15 participants have received instruction covering the CCSO/ Douglas Police Department Drug Task Force, patrol operations, community-oriented policing, criminal investigative unit, search and seizure, crime scene processing, and use of force.

Upcoming sessions will include citizen complaints, discipline process, evidence, domestic violence, and firearms. Participants will also have the opportunity to ride with patrol officers to observe firsthand police job duties throughout a “normal day.”

For more information about the Citizen Police Academy, contact Commander Bart McCulloch at (912) 384-2222, ext. 3616.
