South Georgia State College’s men’s basketball team opened the defense of its GCAA regular season championship with an 80-67 win over Middle Georgia Prep Saturday afternoon.

“This was a good first game,” said head coach Cory Baldwin. “They (Middle Georgia Prep) are a good team, and they threw a lot of stuff at us. I give credit to our guys for finishing it out to get the win.”

Tyrone Sam led all scorers with 27 points. Dunovon Robinson had 16 points, while Andre Elam finished with 10 points.

The Hawks (1-0) travel to Webber International University Nov. 4 before returning home Nov. 7 to face TAAG Academy. Tip for the Nov. 7 game has been changed to 4 p.m.
