A man complained of chest pains and was rushed to the hospital while authorities were investigating a public complaint against the individual. As it turns out, he was also carrying over two grams of methamphetamine.

Officials with the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office say The Douglas-Coffee Drug Unit was following up on complaint from the public on an individual identified as Leonard Donald Voorhees last month when they located him at the Sunoco Store, 1204 East Ward St., sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot.

When detectives attempted to arrest Voorhees on an outstanding, however, the suspect complained he needed his oxygen. Authorities retrieved an oxygen tank from the vehicle, but the batteries were dead in the regulator.  Detectives attempted to purchase batteries at the store, but they were unavailable and EMS was called to the scene.

While waiting on an ambulance, a K-9 deputy arrived and conducted a free air scan of the outer vehicle and received a positive odor response.  Voorhees’ vehicle was searched, and two packages of methamphetamine (2.4grams) were located, along with two packages of small zip lock baggies and two set of scales. Voorhess complained of chest pains and was transported to Coffee Regional Medical Center and admitted.

Voorhees turned himself in to authorities at the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office last week and was served with a warrant for possession of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute.
