Judge Ben Smith shown with his painting, The Ware County Courthouse. He painted the work during a period when he was interested in the work of the artist, El Greco. El Greco’s style is evident in Smith’s version of the old courthouse.

The Okefenokee Heritage Center will celebrate the arts with one of our longest running programs – The Annual Ben Smith Juried Art Competition.  This year marks 40 years that the competition has been held.  Entrants have the opportunity to win cash prizes for first and second place in the categories of painting, photography, graphics, and three-dimensional.

The late Judge Ben Smith was an icon in many different ways to the people in southeast Georgia, as a judge and as an historian, but his impact on the arts will be celebrated at the OHC through the contest and exhibit.  Judge Smith, over his long lifetime, was an art teacher, a practicing artist, and a promoter of the arts.  The art community that has developed in this region is in a large part due to his life’s passion and work.

The entry fee is $40 per artist ($30 for OHC members) for a maximum of two entries. Applicants may be an amateur or professional artist and must be18 years or older.  All entries may not be over three years old and never won an award in any previous OHC Juried Art Exhibition.  All accepted works will remain at the OHC for the duration of the exhibition and must be for sale. Please call 912-285-4260 or email okeheritage @ gmail.com for other eligibility criteria.

Entries should be delivered to the Okefenokee Heritage Center on 1460 N. Augusta Avenue in Waycross anytime after September 15 through September 27.  An awards ceremony and reception will be October 2 at 2:30 p.m. at the Okefenokee Heritage Center.

This Art Exhibition will be open to the public October 1 until November 11.
