A Douglas resident left wheelchair bound through multiple sclerosis is set to travel to Mexico for pioneering treatment to stop the progression of this horrific disease.

Karen Bludworth (51) hopes this revolutionary process will prove so successful it will give her life back.  The procedure is called a hematopoetic stem cell transplant (HSCT).  Karen and her husband will travel to Mexico next April in an effort to reset her immune system.

Karen’s stem cells will be removed from her own bone marrow and she will receive a grueling round of chemotherapy.  Her stem cells will then be re-introduced to set her immune system anew and back to normal.

Karen was diagnosed with MS in 2002 and has increasingly gotten worse. She is now diagnosed with primary progressive MS. She had to medically retire from a law enforcement career with the Bureau of Prisons back in 2004.  She is a mother of two boys and their only memory is their mom being in a wheelchair.

Karen states, “At this point, I would just like to stand for their important moments of their lives.”

Karen is on a desperate mission to help raise money in time and has set up a campaign to help her reach her goal. To learn more or to contribute, please visit https://www.gofundme.com/helpkaren2016.
