Victim of Tuesday car v. train accident identified

The individual who was killed Tuesday morning in a collision with a train in Coffee County has been identified as Alana Lyons, 17, of Atkinson County.

Law enforcement has not released any details of the accident. However, Lyons was killed when a train struck the car she was driving at the Wendell Sears Road railroad tracks. Wendell Sears Road is a heavily traveled two-lane road that connects Highway 32 East and Highway 158 East.

Lyons was a junior at Atkinson County High School and a joint enrollment student at South Georgia State College’s Douglas campus. Tuesday afternoon, the Atkinson County Board of Education released the following statement:  “Dear Parents, Students, Faculty, and Community Members, today our little community has been greatly saddened by the death of a beloved Atkinson County High School Junior, Alana Lyons. Of course, it is very difficult for all of us to face the death of a young person. Today, a support team of psychologists, counselors, and social workers for Atkinson County Schools worked with our staff members to provide counseling and support to students. In the days to come, we will continue to have this support available for all our students. I know you join me in extending our heartfelt sympathy and prayers to Alana’s family and friends. Please do not hesitate to contact the high school at (912) 422-3267 if you have any concerns or questions. Sincerely, Superintendent Bob Brown.”
