In January 2017, Engineer Lee Clements, of the Douglas Fire Department, received Fire Instructor 1 certification from the Georgia Fire Academy. The Fire Instructor I course is designed to prepare candidates to demonstrate the knowledge and ability to conduct instruction from prepared materials.

“I am proud to see Engineer Clements receive this certification,” says Fire Chief Larry Wilson. “Our firefighters are constantly training and motivating themselves to stay up to date and become better firemen so they can serve the citizens of Douglas and Coffee County to the best of their abilities.”

Training in this course included the characteristics of a good instructor, the role of the instructor in the fire service, summary of the psychology of learning, procedures for planning and presenting the instruction, and evaluation and testing techniques. Also included are instructional planning and development, methods and techniques, materials and aids, and evaluation/testing.

The Georgia Fire Academy, which was founded in 1975, oversees all training—both basic and advanced—for career and volunteer firefighters in the state of Georgia. As a division within Georgia Public Safety Training Center, the Fire Academy operates out of the main campus in Forsyth, Georgia and conducts training at offsite locations by request.
