Taylor Whitley, GWCFC Journalism Student

“Who wouldn’t want to be a part of an event that brings together spandex, leather, chaps, headbands, poker, and running shorts all for a good cause?” questioned Abe Morris, the principal at George Washington Carver Freshman campus (GWCFC). Kick stands up, laces tied, and clips in for the annual charity event entitled “Bikers for Books.” Bikers for Books is a charity poker run that will be run throughout Douglas and in some surrounding areas. The goal is to raise money for GWCFC in order to provide students with a book, free of charge. Their motto supports this goal by stating for there to be “A book in the hand for every rider and runner on the road.”

This event will take place Saturday, April 29 at the George Washington Carver Freshman Campus (GWCFC) on 1020 S. Gaskin Ave. This race is intended for bikers, cyclists, runners, and walkers. Whether you wish to participate or watch, it’s fun for the entire family. There will be plenty of other things going on such as door prizes being awarded, delicious food being served, and much more.

For runners (3 miles), walkers (3 miles), and cyclists (16 miles), there will be an out and back route. Bikers will have a circle route to follow that is around 60 miles long. This event would deliver even more fun if you bring a friend or relative along.

To register you can go online to RunSignUp.com and enter the race name “Bikers for Books,” or pick up a registration form from GWCFC in the front office, or you can register at 8:30 am on race day. The cost for runners, walkers, cyclists, and motorcyclists is $30 and $10 for motorcyclist passengers. The price includes a t-shirt for all participants registered by April 24 and a meal ticket for all participants. Individuals who register after April 24 will be given a t-shirt only while supplies last.

The Bikers for Books Boosters are still seeking sponsors so if you or someone you know would be interested, you can contact Abe Morris, the principal at GWCFC, at (912) 384-1342.
