On May 1, 2018, more than 50 homeschooled students participated in an educational co op at Gen. Coffee State Park which focused on the study of reptiles. The students and parents were taught about reptiles by “Turtleman” Chris Adams and by “Snakeman” Robert Preston. Mr. Adams and Mr. Preston gave informative, entertaining talks to the group about various reptiles, and both brought live snakes to show as well as an iguana, alligator skull, turtle shells, preserved hybrid snakes and a preserved baby alligator.

After enjoying sack lunches, the students visited four educational stations led by parents and teenaged homeschoolers that focused on sea turtles, bearded dragons, alligators and crocodiles, and the endangered gopher turtle. They were taught through visual aids, brief lectures, hands-on projects, and a live bearded dragon.

The local homeschool group, Coffee County Christian Home Educators (CCCHE), hosts two or more educational co ops each school year focusing on a variety of topics that have included several foreign countries, specific states in the USA, birds and butterflies, space exploration, and the Olympics. The group meets on alternating months during the school year to give support to each other, and to plan field trips, educational events, parties and other activities for the students and their families. For more information on CCCHE, please contact President Morgan Corbean at mcorbean@gmail.com.
