The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council (DMYC) held its first meeting on August 9, 2018, for the 2018 – 2019 school year. Items on the agenda included discussion about the social media pages for the Youth Council, recognition of youth in our community, and recognition of the first participant in the Teen Court program.

The council also heard presentations from Stevie Young (Parks & Recreation Director) and Mike Bazell (Ambitious Young Men) about their programs, followed by the Jr. Public Information report.

Each month the DMYC will highlight a member of the MYC and recognize an outstanding youth in our community. For the month of August, the council member that was highlighted was Ms. Savannah Cothern, the Jr. Mayor Pro Tem and Jr. Commissioner for Ward 6. She is the daughter of Raybo and Dorothy Carver. She has two brothers and two sisters. Ms. Cothern is in the 12th grade, senior of Coffee County Career Academy and also dually enrolled at Wiregrass Regional Technical College. She is in skills USA at her school. Savannah is a senior 4-H member and won third place at state congress for dairy foods this summer. Savannah’s future aspirations are to obtain a degree in Business Administration and would love to work for and serve the city of Douglas one day.

“I have learned many leadership and communication skills within this club and the Mayor’s Youth Council,” says Cothern. “The DMYC has become a big influence in my everyday life and I have learned so much about government operations. I look forward to serving in the Douglas Teen Court program as well”.

The community youth chosen to spotlight for August is Ms. Zemiria Bussey. Zemiria is an Honor Graduate of the 2018 Class of Coffee High School and was dually enrolled at South Georgia State College. While attending school, Ms. Bussey had 14 years of perfect attendance. Out of the 477 graduates in 2018, Zemiria was ranked 36. Ms. Bussey was also a four year scholar athlete.

The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council meets each third Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. at City Hall in the Council Chambers. The MYC wants to hear from citizens about youth in our community that are doing exceptional things with their lives. To submit a youth to be recognized, please contact Dinitra Williams, Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council Coordinator, at dwilliams@cityofdouglas.com or call the City Clerk’s office at (912) 389- 3405
