At Monday’s county commission work session and general meeting, commissioners discussed a new subdivision near Carver Baptist Church and purchasing four new vehicles for the sheriff’s office, among other items of business.

After addressing minor changes to the county employee health plan and the need for new janitor services at the FSA building on East Ward Street, the board reviewed a resolution to submit the 2019 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application. The application will be seeking federal government funds to be used for street paving and drainage improvements in the Jacobs Circle area. It is necessary per state and federal guidelines that the commissioners disclose any potential interests in the area. After addressing the potential conflicts briefly again – they dealt with the issue more fully at their last meeting – the board agreed to carry the resolution forward to the regular meeting.

Soon thereafter the board took up review of an engineering contract for new construction in the Carver Church area. The project itself is expected to cost over $300,000, but the board must first approve the payment of $21,090 to Statewide Engineering for design services. The planned construction is for Willow Way subdivision.

Next the board reviewed bids for four new vehicles for the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s office is seeking to purchase two four-door pickups and a Dodge Durango and a Chevrolet Tahoe pursuit vehicle. The low bid for the two pickups was $59,954.24 from Prince Ford. The low bid on the Durango was $24,214 from Coffee Chrysler Dodge. Hardy Chevrolet submitted the low bid for the Tahoe at $33,053.44. County Administrator Wesley Vickers recommended that the board accept the low bids and the matter was carried forward to the regular meeting.

The regular meeting was called to order at 9:30 AM. The board approved the resolution to seek funding by submitting the CDBG for paving and improvements in the Jacobs Circle area. They also agreed to appoint Jacob Moore to the board of Seven Rivers RC&D Council on Land Conservation. Mr. Moore’s term is ending March 18. The board approved a motion to appoint Mr. Moore for a term to run through June 30, 2022.

Next the board approved the engineering contract with Statewide and approved the purchase of the vehicles for the sheriff’s office. The meeting was then adjourned.
