Poultry judging team preparing for next week’s competition

Kevin Tatum, County Extension Coordinator

We want to thank our teen leaders who volunteered their time to help with the Children’s Art Festival on Saturday, March 9. They were Ashton Ates, Jeremiah Brantley, Amelia Crockett, Kilee Davis, Abygail Harper, Glenn O’Steen, Kameron Pennell, Justin Strickland, Sariah Wells and Mrs. Chalanda Woods. I know that Mrs. Gina Gibbs appreciated your help and we do too. Thanks for all that you did to help.

Poultry Judging

The 4-H Poultry Judging Team only has about six more practice days until the competition which will be held on April 11 in Tifton. Team members who have signed up and are preparing for the contest include: CMS: Nathan Cooper, Abygail Harper, Jayden Hendrickson, Ariyah Scott, and Lane Youngblood; Homeschool: Anna Miller and Miley Vaughan; ICE: D.J. Pestel; Junior 4-H Club: Glenda Grantham, Jenna Sears, Janilla Warren, and Carlee Woods; Senior 4-H Club: Ashton Ates, Jeremiah Brantley, Savannah Cothern, Amelia Crockett, and Sariah Wells. If the Senior team qualifies, the top four scoring members on the team will advance to the State 4-H Poultry Judging Contest in Athens on Friday, May 3. Good luck to both teams.

Summer Day Camps

Cloverleaf 4-H members, do you want to have fun with other 4-H members during your summer break? If so, you need to sign up for the Cloverleaf summer activities. We have four fun-filled days planned to educate and entertain you this summer. It all starts with a tour of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge in Folkston on Monday, June 3. We will take a boat ride out into the prairie to get a close look a mother nature in all her splendor. On Friday, June 7, we will travel to Macon to see the Macon Bacon baseball team take on the Lexington County Blowfish. The Macon Bacon is the most recent addition to the Coastal Plain League Class D minor league baseball league. This event features round trip transportation, admission to the game, and unlimited hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, and sodas.

The third activity includes a trip to the Ronald McDonald House in Savannah, followed by lunch at Cici’s Pizza, a dolphin cruise at Tybee Island, and a trip to the Savannah River Street candy store. This activity will be held on Tuesday, June 25. The last activity will be a trip to Statesboro on Thursday, June 27, to visit the Clubhouse for fun and games.

The registration fee is $25 per activity and half of the fee and the registration form is due by Friday, April 12. The balance of the fee is due by Friday, May 10. Don’t miss out on these fun events.

Camp Fundraiser

4-H members who are attending summer camp can take advantage of one more fundraiser to help offset their camp fees. We have a Boston Butt sale from Hog-N-Bones. Parents should come to the 4-H office to get tickets to sell. 4-H members get $4 per Boston Butt sold towards their camp fee. Orders are due back to the 4-H office by Wednesday, April 17.

4-H Camp Information

There are still a few spaces left for the various 4-H camps this summer. Cloverleaf 4-H members (4-6 graders) will camp at Rock Eagle the week of July 1-5. Junior 4-H members (7-8 graders) will camp at Camp Jekyll the week of June 17-21. Senior 4-H members (9-12 graders) will also camp at Rock Eagle, but they will camp the week of May 27-31. Other specialty camps offered to Junior 4-H members are Wilderness Challenge Camp at Wahsega 4-H Center the week of July 1-5, or Marine Resources Camp at Burton 4-H Center on Tybee Island the week of July 8-12 or July 15-19.  Senior 4-H members can also attend Senior Extreme Camp at the Rock Eagle Pioneer Camp the week of June 10-14. This weekend will include a lot of fun activities on the beach, some educational workshops, a dance, and much more. It’s a great opportunity to meet new friends from all over Southeast Georgia. Seventh and eighth graders interested in attending need to contact the 4-H office for more information.
