SGSC announces 2019 Commencement events and speakers

South Georgia State College is excited to announce its annual commencement ceremonies to honor graduates from summer 2018, fall 2018 and spring 2019. The Douglas Campus ceremony will be held Wednesday, May 8, 2019, at 8:30 a.m. on the lawn in front of Peterson Hall. The Waycross Campus ceremony will be held Thursday, May 9, 2019, at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium.

The keynote speaker for the Douglas Campus ceremony is Ms. JoAnne Lewis. Ms. Lewis served as President of the Douglas-Coffee County Chamber of Commerce and Executive Director of the Douglas-Coffee Economic Development Authority prior to her retirement in 2015. Her overall career included more than 25 years in the field of community and economic development with local and state government. She currently manages Still Waters Outreach, a Christian women’s substance abuse recovery center in Coffee County. Its mission is to provide a place of spiritual healing where women can recover through faith and prepare for workforce reentry while living life sober.

Ms. Sarah Rettker will provide the keynote address for the Waycross Campus ceremony. Ms. Rettker is the Vice President of Investor Engagement for the Georgia Chamber of Commerce. In her role, she serves as an advocate for the Georgia Chamber’s investors and employees ensuring an exceptional end-to-end experience. She is responsible for building strong relationships with business and civic leaders across Georgia while developing, executing and refining programs, communication and interactions that align with the Georgia Chamber’s strategic vision to maintain the state’s position as a globally competitive leader. Currently, she is working to advance initiatives around the importance of Diversity & Inclusion and Corporate Social Responsibility for company performance.

The community is invited to attend and help celebrate these special occasions with the class of 2019. Please be advised that West College Park Drive on the Douglas Campus will be closed on May 8th from 7 a.m. until noon.
