County, state goat shows are quickly approaching

Kevin D. Tatum

County Extension Coordinator, Coffee County

It’s time to get signed up for the coming year’s county and state 4-H and FFA goat shows. We will be holding tagging day for the goats at the Coffee Middle School Livestock Building on Monday, June 24, from 5 to 6:30 PM. In case someone has a conflict with this date, we will have a second tagging date on Tuesday, July 16, from 5 to 6:30 PM. Please come prepared to complete all necessary paperwork, assist with tagging your goats, and pay your registration fees. For more information, please contact the 4-H office at (912) 384-1402, or any of the Coffee County School System agriculture teachers at Coffee Middle, Coffee High, or George Washington Carver Freshman Campuses.

 Dean’s Award Competition

Georgia 4-H members have the opportunity to compete in the Dean Awards competition by submitting a cumulative portfolio of their 4-H career. The five areas of competition include: Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Citizenship, Communications and the Arts, Family and Consumer Sciences, and Leadership. Award winners become Master 4-H’ers and receive a $500 scholarship.

The portfolio can include any 4-H information from the 4-H members past. Portfolios are usually due in May and then judged to determine who will advance to the interview portion. Around five 4-H members per category are then invited to Rock Eagle 4-H Center for an interview. This year’s Deans Award interviews will be held on Friday, June 21, at the beginning of State 4-H Council.

Savannah Cothern has submitted a portfolio in the Family and Consumer Sciences category this year and is awaiting the announcement of this year’s interviewees. We want to wish her the best of luck in this competition.

State Congress Competitions

Before the opening event of State 4-H Council on Friday, June 21, Savannah Cothern and Evie Woodward will compete in the DPA project for State 4-H Congress (which is the end of July). Since the event location for State Congress does not have kitchen facilities or an auditorium stage like Rock Eagle, the cooking and performing arts projects are held before the start of State Council each year at Rock Eagle. Savannah is competing in the Dairy Foods project and Evie in Performing Arts-Vocal. Good luck ladies and do your best.

Junior/Senior DPA Portfolios

Rising 7th through 12th graders who plan to participate in District Project Achievement next year are reminded to be working on your DPA portfolio this summer. You need to plan activities and implement them so that you have a full portfolio, especially in the areas of main project sharing and main project helping. These sections of your portfolio are very important and play a significant role in your portfolio score.

Please contact the 4-H office to schedule an appointment with one of our 4-H staff members if you need some help with your portfolio.

If you have questions about the Coffee County 4-H Club program, or questions around the farm or home, please feel free to contact the Coffee County Extension office at (912) 384-1402. Remember, we are YOUR local connection to the University of Georgia.
