The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council (DMYC) held its monthly meeting on December 19, 2019, at 6pm at City Hall and recognized three outstanding youth in the community. The council also heard presentations from the Boys & Girls Club of Coffee County Region, the Ambitious Young Men (A.Y.M.) and the First Love Yourself Girls (F.L.Y.) organizations about events coming up for local youth.  City Clerk, Wynetta Bolder, gave a brief year in review of City projects and various activities the DMYC participated in during 2019.

For the month of December, Tyrian Wilson was chosen as the Outstanding Youth Council Member to spotlight.  Tyrian Wilson is serving his first-year as a member of the Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council. Tyrian’s parents are Twyla Wilson, Carlos McDuffie, and Timothy Tyson.  Wilson is a Senior attending Coastal Plains Charter School. He is a member of the Empowerment Center International Ministries with Pastor Frank C. Bussey where he serves with the youth department and on the parking lot ministry. Tyrian is a member of the Mayor’s Youth Council and bailiff for the Coffee County Teen Court.

He has over 60 hours of community service this year.

The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council fosters leadership skills and allows students to be an advisory council to the Mayor and Commission.  Members of the council have monthly meetings which include discussion of city issues and brainstorming for new ideas for the Mayor and government leaders; volunteerism, participation in retreats, training, and travel experiences.  Youth applications are now being accepted for the 2020-2021 school year. To submit a youth for Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council or Douglas-Coffee County Teen Court, please contact Dinitra Williams, Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council Coordinator, at dwilliams@cityofdouglas.com or call the City Clerk’s office at (912) 389-3405.
