Chief Magistrate Julie Phillips has released the following statement regarding the Magistrate’s operations during the COVID-19 crisis:

“For the safety of all citizens, the Magistrate Court of Coffee County, by Order of Chief Justice Harold D. Melton, has suspended all non-essential functions — these functions are any court hearings that require an individual to appear in person – until April 14, 2020, unless otherwise extended. We will remain open and are accepting filings; although I do encourage you to use online filing at www.coffeemagcourt.com. Any cases filed will not be processed until Judge Melton’s order is lifted. During the period of this order, all deadlines or other time schedules for filing requirements will be extended.

“To the extent feasible, the office of Magistrate Court will remain open to address essential functions; these are necessary to protect health, safety, and liberty of individuals. Essential functions are 1) Where an immediate liberty or safety concern is present requiring the attention of the court as the court is available; and 2) Criminal court search warrants, arrest warrants for certified peace officers, initial appearances, and bond reviews.

“If you should need the assistance of the Magistrate Court Office, we are here to help. Please call on us at (912) 384-1381. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding in this matter. I pray you all stay safe and healthy.”
