On Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019, voters in the city of Douglas voted 1,889 to 334 to approve the Douglas redevelopment referendum, commonly called the tax allocation district (TAD). The TAD is, for all intents and purposes, the Douglas Square Shopping Center, which will be the home of several new retail businesses. Among the businesses slated for the TAD is a Chik-fil-A restaurant.

The COVID-19 virus shut down many segments of the economy and delayed the start of construction of the shopping center. A couple of weeks ago, work finally began. Friday, one of the biggest questions surrounding the shopping center was answered: Yes, Douglas is getting a Chik-fil-A and a local family will own and operate the restaurant.

In a Facebook post, Matt Baker of Douglas announced that he and his family will own the new Chik-fil-A. The post reads as follows: “Friday was signing day for us and we are excited to announce that I am now officially the Owner/Operator of Chick-fil-A Douglas, GA!! This is a dream come true for our family – to serve our hometown. We love each of you, we love our community and we look forward to serving y’all a delicious chicken sandwich soon. To God be all the glory!”

So now it’s official: Chik-fil-A is on the way. And it can’t get here fast enough.
