Gary Alan Boren, 74, of Birmingham, passed away on Saturday, August 29 in Douglas, GA. Gary was born on May 22, 1946 in Houston, TX, the son of the late Glenn Boren and Laura Lee Tucker Boren.

Survivors include his son, Alan Boren (Robin) of Atlanta, GA; daughter, Lindsay Day (John) of Douglas, GA; three grandchildren, Ava Boren, Addie Day and Jake Day; mother of his children, Donna Boren; three brothers, Glenn Boren (Patti) of San Antonio, TX, Wayne Boren (Joyce) of Clarkdale, AZ and Jimmy Boren (Felicia) of Mobile, AL; and several nieces and nephews.

Gary graduated from Shades Valley High (1964) and The University of Alabama (1968) before serving in the Alabama National Guard. Following his longtime career with AT&T, Gary enjoyed his retirement in Orange Beach before relocating to Birmingham to help care for his beloved mother. Later he moved to Douglas, GA to be with his daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. Gary was a loving father and grandfather and treasured his close relationships with his three brothers and long-time friends. Some of his fondest memories were during his time at UA as a Sigma Chi, teaching Sunday school and coaching young athletes. He was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, a gifted artist, crossword and Jeopardy! wiz, and devoted UA sports fan.

A celebration of life gathering will be held at a later date on the Gulf Coast.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Gary’s honor to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Sims Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
