The month of March is Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month; however, not only do we want to spread a message of awareness, we want to spread one of inclusion and ability. We want to shed light on the accomplishments of individuals with developmental disabilities and how they work, participate, and make an impact in their communities.

Larry Henderson, 47, has worked for Burger King since he was 17 years old. You probably recognize him, because for the past 16 years, Larry has worked at Burger King in Douglas. We sat down with Larry to ask him about his job there, what he does in his spare time, and for advice about getting involved in the community.

Q: What do you like most about your job at Burger King?

A: Breaking down boxes, washing dishes, and taking out the trash

Q: If you could have any job in the world, what would it be?

A: Any fast food place. (Larry likes his money!)

Q: What advice would you give someone looking for a job?

A: Look on the internet with your tablet or phone. Try Pizza Hut.

Q: Tell me about your church.

A: Saving Grace Ministries – I love all the people there.

Q: How long have you been attending?

A: 6 years.

Q: What are some activities you enjoy doing?

A: Bible class, singing, and helping people.

Q: What made you want to get involved in your church?

A: I love God and I love helping people.

Q: Tell me about your favorite hobby.

A: Going to the gym – Peak Physique

Q: How long have you had this hobby?

A: 10 years. I started at a gym in Tifton and went there for about 4 years.

Q: How did you get started going to the gym?

A: I wanted to get healthy.

Q: What advice would you give someone looking to start going to the gym?

A: Eat right, have gym clothes and a bag. Get your locker at the gym. Do dumbbells, bench press, and small curl bar. If you eat right, it will help your stomach.

The next time you see Larry at work, church, or at the gym – make sure to say hello!
