Mr. Ronald Lewis Gurley, age 61 of Axson, Ga., passed away, Monday, November 28, 2022, at Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., following a short illness.  He was born in Douglas, Ga. on January 13, 1961, son of Mr. and Mrs. Winifred and Jo Carol Joyce Gurley.  

 

 

Lewis made his home in Axson where he worked many yearsof dedicated service with the Atkinson County Department of Law Enforcement.  He was of the Baptist faith and a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.  Lewis enjoyed many different things like hunting, fishing, guns, knives, and gardening but if you were blessed to know Lewis, you knew that spending time and making memories with family and friends was where his joy was found, especially with his greatest blessing, his son, Gaven.  He was preceded in death, along with his parents, by his wife, Teresa Brantley Gurley, and brother, Wayne Gurley. 

 

 

Survivors include:

 

 

Son:  Gaven L. Gurley of Axson, Ga.

 

 

Brother:  Layne Gurley and wife, Wylene of Pearson, Ga.

Niece:  Lynn Hernandez and husband, Tony of Ellabell, Ga.

 

 

2 Great Nephews:  Adrian Hernandez and wife, Ashley of Wilmington, N.C.  and Nicholas Hernandez of Ellabell, Ga.

 

 

Great-Great Niece & Nephew:  Gracelyn and Wyatt Hernandez

 

 

Funeral services for Mr. Gurley were held Friday, December 2, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Pearson, Ga. with Rev. Walter James and Rev. William Pope officiating.  Special musical selections included, “In the Garden” and “Amazing Grace” rendered by cd.  Soft music for the prelude and postlude was provided by Patricia Corbitt, at the piano.  The interment followed in Mt. Zion Cemetery.

 

 

Serving as active pallbearers were:  Gaven Gurley, Caleb White, Michael Brown, Justin Brown, Cameron Faulk, and Nicholas Hernandez. 

Serving as honorary pallbearers were:  Layne Gurley, Staff Sgt. Adrian Hernandez, Johnny Corbitt, H.F. Mizell, Wad Sears, Pat Delk, Bruce Gurley, Jr., and Tony Hernandez.

 

 

 

Relihan Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
