Tyreek Hill is calling his shot.

The Miami Dolphins wide receiver has vowed to surpass 2,000 receiving yards this season. That’s a mark that no NFL wide receiver has ever reached. The single-season record stands at 1,964, which Calvin Johnson set for the Detroit Lions in 2012. (It’s also worth noting that Johnson set the record in a 16-game season. As of last year, NFL teams now play a 17-game regular season.)

Hill made the statement on his podcast “It Needed to Be Said.” He also all but guaranteed a Super Bowl win for the Dolphins. Hill already has one Super Bowl in his career — Super Bowl LIV, which he won in 2020 with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Hill is in his second season with the Dolphins. Last year, he had career highs in receptions (119) and yards (1,710) and was on pace to eclipse the 2,000 yard mark until he tapered off at the end of the season. Much of that had to do with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s injuries — and questions about Tagovailoa’s health linger this season.

The Dolphins are going to live or die with Tagovailoa under center. They did not make any big offseason moves to bring in another established quarterback. Miami certainly has a talented receiving corps — along with Hill are Jaylen Waddle (1,356 yards last year), Robbie Chosen, and Braxton Berrios — and Tagovailoa has shown that he can make plays as long he stays on his feet and doesn’t get hit. Miami has three other quarterbacks on the roster — Mike White, James Blackman, and Skylar Thompson — but the Dolphins’ success or failure will depend on Tagovailoa.

In spite of his quarterbacks’ question marks, Hill is confident he can accomplish both of his goals this year. “I feel like I’ve got the right tools around me. I’ve obviously got the most accurate quarterback in the NFL. I’ve got one of the best head coaches in the NFL and also my position coach is a monster also . . . So I feel like this one of those years that I can achieve it,” he said on the podcast.
