Once again, the top performers in last week’s game between the Coffee Trojans and the Bolles Bulldogs were senior running back Fred Brown and junior linebacker Jyarius Carter. Coffee won 17-9 in the Border Classic in Brunswick.

Brown led the team in rushing with 109 yards on 24 carries. However, for the first time all season, Brown did not find the end zone. Senior receiver Pat McCall carried the ball twice for 68 yards, one of which went for a 62 yard touchdown. Senior Tyriq Edwards, whom the offense borrowed from the defensive side of the ball caught two passes for 25 yards. Coffee’s other touchdown came courtesy of a nine yard pass from sophomore quarterback Trey Ross to junior receiver Bray Coe.

Quarterback Maurice Hansley completed nine of his 11 passes for 78 yards before leaving the game in the second half due to an ankle injury. He also had eight carries for 10 yards. Ross came in completed his only pass — the touchdown to Coe. He ran the ball once for 10 yards.

Carter tallied eight total tackles (four assisted, four solo) to bring his team-leading tackles per game to 6.3. One of his stops was for a loss. Junior linebacker Chris Reed, who has been filling in for the injured Mykevius Smith, had seven tackles during the game. Senior Jayden Hancock recorded five tackles against the Bulldogs. Senior defensive end Lorenzo Harvey had the only Coffee sack.

The Trojan defense limited the high powered Bolles offense to 91 yards rushing and 160 passing — 141 yards of which came courtesy of sophomore receiver Naeem Burroughs. Coffee defensive back Anthony Paulk had the unenviable task of guarding Burroughs; Paulk broke up six passes that were headed to Burroughs.

On special teams, junior punter Micale Smith pinned the Bulldogs inside their own 20 on each of his four punts. Kicker James Jarrard put two of his kicks in the end zone for touchbacks while Jonah Saylor was perfect on extra points and made one of two field goal attempts.

The Trojans tallied 391 total yards, 15 first downs, and were penalized eight times for 58 yards. By contrast, the Bulldogs had 10 first downs and accumulated 56 penalty yards on seven infractions.

The 3-0 Trojans take on the Salem Seminoles Friday night at Jardine Stadium. The game begins at 7:30.
