Ruth Butts Floyd, a 96-year-old resident of Valdosta, peacefully passed away at her home on Wednesday, September 13, 2023. She was born in Douglas, GA, on January 28, 1927, to the late Thomas Jefferson Butts and Charity Davis Butts. At a young age, Ruth demonstrated her work ethic by beginning her employment at Douglas Airfield at 16 and working at Bell Bomber in Marietta, GA, building airplanes for WWII at just 17 years old.

Aside from working at AT&T as a telephone technician, Ruth had a green thumb and took great pride in her gardening skills, earning the yard of the month award multiple times. She was a loving wife to Onis Floyd, whom she had been married to for 55 years until his passing in 2001. Ruth cherished her role as a mother and grandmother and held a deep love for her family and faith as a devoted Christian. She was an active member of New Covenant Church.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Linda Gayle Floyd of Valdosta; grandson, Rick (Lizzy) Lasseter of Jacksonville, FL; as well as her great-grandchildren, Isaac Lyndon Lasseter and Elliot Noelle Lasseter, both residing in Jacksonville, FL. A sister-in-law Kathleen Griffis, and brother-in-law Sam (Patsy) Floyd. She also leaves behind her close friend, Carl “David” Hatchell, Jr., of Valdosta, and numerous nieces and nephews. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and three sisters: Naomi Pearson, Grace Mancil, and Helen Burkett.

A funeral service honoring Ruth’s memory will take place at 10 am on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home, with Brother Michael Wells officiating.

Following the service, she will be laid to rest at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Tuesday night from 6-8 pm at the funeral home. Those who wish to express their condolences may do so online at www.mclanecares.com.
