The GBI has arrested and charged Mako Jones, Jr., age 19, of Baxley, Georgia, with Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony. Jones turned himself in to the Appling County Jail on January 4, 2024. On Tuesday, January 2, 2024, the Baxley Police Department asked the GBI investigate.

The investigation shows that Jones shot Mike Sims, age 31, of Baxley, GA, multiple times while they were near Hopps Street. Sims and Jones were both involved in a dice game at the time of the shooting. Jones was eventually taken to a hospital where he remains in stable condition.

This investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Baxley Police Department at (912) 367-8305 or the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Douglas at (912) 389-4103.  Anonymous tips can also be submitted by calling 1-800-597-TIPS (8477), online at https://gbi.georgia.gov/submit-tips-online, or by downloading the See Something, Send Something mobile app.

Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Brunswick Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
