People don’t like it when you mess with their food.

An argument over a meal at a South Gaskin Avenue address led to aggravated assault charges earlier this month, according to a Douglas Police Department incident report.

The report states that around 1:30 a.m. on January 7, 2024, police officers answered a call regarding a domestic dispute. When they arrived, the complainant said that she had fixed herself a plate of food and sat it in her room. Her boyfriend, Willie Sparkman, then allegedly came to the house and began eating her food. The complainant wasn’t happy and the two began arguing, the report says. During the argument, the report states that Sparkman took the victim’s phone and threw it against the wall, leaving a hole. Then he picked up the phone and put it in his pocket.

The complainant took the plate and left the room. The report says that Sparkman followed her, grabbed her around her neck and began choking her. She began to defend herself, according to the report. Then Sparkman allegedly punched her in the face. He went into the living room where he kicked then punched a television and threw two chairs against the bedroom door, causing more damage, the report says. Afterwards, Sparkman left the home.

The victim’s son was in the home but he didn’t witness the altercation.

Sparkman was arrested on January 9, 2024 and charged with aggravated assault, criminal trespass, and theft by taking. He was transported to the Coffee County Jail but has since been released.
