It’s been a tough week or so for the South Georgia State College Hawks. Since defeating the Andrew College Tigers 14-9 at home on March 19, the Hawks have lost six of their last seven games — all to conference opponents.

Their lone win over that span came yesterday when the defeated the Gordon State College Highlanders 1-0 in game one of a double-header on the SGSC campus. How did game two go? The Hawks lost 21-6 thanks in large part to a 12-run second inning.

Game one of the double-header was a pitcher’s duel in the truest sense. The Hawks scored the only run of the game when leadoff man Trey Jeffers of Ware County hit the second pitch he saw over the left field fence for a home run. That one run would prove to be the difference. Nathan Webb threw a 102-pitch complete game against the Highlanders. He struck out seven, walked one, and only gave up two hits.

In game two, SGSC did manage to score two runs in the first to take an early 2-0 lead. Then the wheels came off. The Highlanders scored 12 runs on nine hits, three errors (SGSC had seven errors on the day), one walk, and one hit by pitch to take a very comfortable 12-2 advantage. The Hawks managed a run in the fifth and three in the seventh. But Gordon State wasn’t through, either — the Highlanders added nine more to cruise to a 21-6 win.

SGSC used seven pitchers, none of which lasted longer than 1 2/3 innings. The loss went to starter Alex Collins who surrendered nine runs — only one of which was earned — on seven hits.

The Hawks are 19-19 on the season (2-6 in conference play) and next face the ABAC Stallions in a conference match-up Tuesday in Douglas. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
