The biggest issue the Douglas City Commission has faced in 2024 ended up being a non-event after all. Allen Peacock had filed a request to change the zoning of a piece of property on the southern edge of Touchton Woods at the end of Rose Lane to Gateway for the purpose of building an office and a storage unit for construction equipment and materials. The first reading of the request, which took place at the March 25 city commission meeting, drew a crowd of nearly 50 Touchton Woods residents — all of whom opposed the request.

With the second reading and public hearing scheduled for the Monday, April 8 meeting, everyone was expecting a potentially contentious meeting. However, prior to the meeting, Mr. Peacock withdrew his request, ending the matter once and for all.

The commission still had an agenda full of business, however, albeit more of the mundane sort. Here is what commissioners approved at the April 8 meeting:

      • Hazardous materials monitoring equipment for the fire department ($22,529);

      • Liz Grantham to the Downtown Development Authority to serve the unexpired term of Jade Lyon;

      • The Coffee County Hazard Mitigation Plan;

      • $12,000 from the DCA Special Programs Fund to finish a home from the 2021 CDBG for home rehabilitation;

      • Closing a portion of Coweta Avenue behind First Baptist Church on April 21 from 12-4 p.m. for the church’s annual picnic; and

      • A $46,400.93 purchase of playground equipment for Wheeler Park. The city will purchase the equipment then the Community Foundation of Coffee County will reimburse the city.

    The next commission meeting will take place on Monday, April 22, 2024.
