You’ve got to read the fine print on those temporary restraining orders.

On April 17 at around 9:30 a.m., officers from the Douglas Police
Department arrested James Sims Jr., 35, of Douglas, after he allegedly
violated a temporary restraining order. According to an incident report
from the Douglas Police Department, Sims had called the police because
he wanted to get his possessions from a home on Leader Street. When the
officer arrived, Sims stated that there was a TPO on him and he couldn’t
be within 500 feet of the home without law enforcement present.

The officer obtained a copy of the TPO and check its conditions.
According to the report, the order said that Sims couldn’t be within 500
yards — not feet — of the home and he could not have any contact with
the victim or the victim’s children with or without law enforcement
present.

Sims was about 100 feet from the home when the officer arrived. As such,
the officer arrested Sims for allegedly violating the TPO. He was
charged with aggravated stalking and transported to the Coffee County
Jail, where he remains.
