Another Douglas man has been arrested and jailed on illegal drug charges as a result of an investigation that began while the suspect
was allegedly breaking traffic laws or city ordinances while riding a bicycle.

According to a report from the Douglas Police Department, around 1 a.m. on June 4, 2024, a police officer noticed a man on a bike, identified as Roderick Shandar Gaskin, 51, riding on the sidewalk on East College Park Drive between South Coffee Avenue and South Pearl Avenue. The report states that the bike had a light on the front but no lights or reflectors on the rear. Because Gaskin was “riding on the sidewalk and the bicycle not being properly lighted,” the officer hit his lights to stop Gaskin. At that point, the report says, Gaskin pulled something out of his pocket and throw the object over a fence
into a yard on South Pearl Avenue. Then he stopped, the report says.

The officer called for assistance and two more officers arrived. Gaskin denied throwing anything over the fence and argued with the officers. One of the officers found an object over the fence where
Gaskin allegedly threw the object. The object, a round metal box, contained suspected crack cocaine and methamphetamine.

Gaskin was arrested and charged with several offenses, including possession of cocaine, possession of a Schedule II Controlled Substance (methamphetamine), abandonment of dangerous drugs (two counts), and traffic violations related to riding the bicycle on the sidewalk without proper lighting.

Gaskin remains in the Coffee County Jail.
