Mitchell Lee Garland Kelly, 29, remains in the Coffee County Jail after he allegedly threatened to cut someone’s throat then attempted to break into the victim’s home on Church Street. This is Kelly’s second brush with the law in the last few months. On April 14, he was arrested and jailed after he allegedly stole a pickup from Dollar General on McNeil Drive and crashed it a short distance away.
According to a report from the Douglas Police Department, the incident took place on June 19, 2024, around 11:30 p.m. The complainant stated that he heard his dogs barking that night and he walked outside. He stated that he saw Kelly on the west side of his property. The report says he told Kelly to leave, had a verbal exchange with him, then went back inside. A relative of the complainant, a female, went outside and confronted Kelly. The report says that Kelly pulled a knife, opened it, and threatened to cut the female’s throat.
The complainant heard the exchange and got the victim inside the home. Kelly then started kicking the front door, the report says. There was also a puncture mark on the door that matched the blade of a knife found on Kelly.
The officers were familiar with Kelly, who lived nearby on Pearl Avenue. They began looking for Kelly and found him in a heavily wooded area. Kelly refused to come out, the report says, and attempted to get away. The officers pursued him and eventually apprehended him in the wooded area.
Kelly was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, criminal trespass, and obstruction. He has not been released.
