Black Dodge Challenger one, Suzuki Hayabusa zero.

On Wednesday, July 10, 2024, Jeff Davis County deputies were informed of an Appling County deputy involved in a high speed chase with two sport bikes passing the county line into Jeff Davis County.

Jeff Davis deputies responded to Baxley Highway to assist. Deputies were able to intercept one of the suspects riding an orange Suzuki Hayabusa with a male driver and a female passenger that had been speeding in excess of 120 mph.

Appling County units were able to stop the other suspect in Graham without incident and he was taken into custody. Jeff Davis officials continued to chase the suspects into the city of Hazlehurst. Attempting to elude officers, the motorist turned onto Gill Street and sped off into the Altamaha community.

It was there when one for the specialized investigative units was able to close the gap relatively quickly and soon the driver realized that he could no longer elude officers and came to a stop near the intersection of Altamaha, Ralph Wommack and Joe Norman roads. No one was injured at the time of the arrest and one subject was taken into custody.

Tommy Pagen of Tattnall County was charged with felony fleeing and attempting to elude officers for hitting speeds of 130 mph. He also faces related charges in Appling County. When officers asked Pagen why he chose to pull over all of a sudden, his response was simple: “I saw that black car”.

Jeff Davis County Sheriff Preston Bohannon commends his officers for their quick actions and teamwork.
