Just after 2:30 a.m. on July 5, 2024, deputies investigated a one-vehicle accident that resulted in several minor injuries and one arrest after the occupants, including the driver, allegedly attempted to leave the scene.

According to an incident report from the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received a call on Remington Drive regarding a vehicle crash. When the first officer arrived, the report says he saw a wrecked vehicle, a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe, and two occupants of the vehicle attempt to flee into the woods. One of the occupants, a 16-year-old juvenile, was apprehended. However, the other individual, 18-year-old Jaylon Malik Franklin of Douglas, the alleged driver of the Tahoe, escaped — but only temporarily.

The report says there were four individuals in the vehicle. Two of the occupants managed to get away and went to Coffee Regional Medical Center to be treated for injuries. A deputy headed to CRMC to speak with them. One of the occupants suffered a broken arm while the other had cuts and bruises.

While other officers were on the scene waiting on a tow truck, they noticed Franklin lurking at the wood line. The deputies approached Franklin, who ran again. Eventually, one of the officers caught Franklin and placed him under arrest. He was charged with DUI, hit and run, driving with a suspended license, obstruction, driving too fast for conditions, and failure to maintain lane. He was jailed and later released.
