Unity Park, situated at 625 S. Grady Avenue, is undergoing much-needed upgrades and enhancements. These changes will accommodate individuals of all ages and backgrounds and meet accessibility requirements.
The planned improvements for Unity Park will include rehabilitating the current shelter, installing new grills, ADA-compliant picnic tables, a new playground system, a wellness area with diverse exercise equipment, and revitalizing the basketball court with four new goals. Various sidewalk repairs will be made, and new signage will be placed throughout the park to improve navigability. Additionally, improvements will be made to the baseball fields, transforming them into Little League playing fields with fencing, lighting, bleachers, shade cloth, and renovations to the concession stand.
The City of Douglas is fully committed to enhancing the well-being of its residents. In June 2023, the city proudly announced to the media, Facebook, and its website that Unity Park was set to undergo extensive renovations and improvements, made possible by a generous grant award of $278,000 from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, additional match funding from the City of Douglas, and SPLOST VI funds will bring the project total cost to approximately $1,600,000. This substantial wellness investment in one of the city’s most utilized parks will significantly elevate the community’s recreational space for all to enjoy.
Unity Park was first constructed in 1978 and has undergone minor renovations, repairs, and routine maintenance throughout the years, but has not undergone any major renovations like this project.
