Students in the Coffee County School System will return to school on Monday, October 21. However, things will be a little different than they were before Hurricane Helene.

According to a statement posted on the school system’s Facebook page, freshmen will temporarily attend Coffee Middle School. The George Washington Carver Freshman Campus sustained significant damage during the hurricane. Repairs are being performed but the school is not ready to open. While the school is under repair, ninth graders will report to Coffee Middle School. All bus routes will continue to run as usual, and the transportation department is working closely with debris removal personnel to ensure safe travel for school buses.

Ninth graders should be dropped off at the front of CMS along with CMS students. After school, pick up for ninth graders will be along the same lane but at the front entrance of the CMS auditorium (past the eighth grade pick up area).

The administrative offices of GWCFC will be temporarily located in the front lobby of the CMS auditorium, and ninth grade classes will be held in the auditorium, connections classrooms, and other classrooms not located on the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade halls. According to the system’s statement, freshman campus students and CMS students will have minimal interaction because the two schools will operate independently.

“We remain committed to safely reopening our schools and getting our students back to learning, as we believe that helping students return to a sense of normalcy will benefit the entire community. We are One Coffee, One Team!” the statement concludes.
