Former Trojan Maurice Turner plans to enter transfer portal and leave Louisville

Former Coffee Trojan and current Louisville Cardinals running back Maurice Turner is entering the transfer portal, according to media reports. Turner, a junior, had two solid seasons at Louisville but saw things take a different turn this season due to injury.

Turner showed that he had the talent to lead Louisville’s running back corps when, as a freshman in 2022, he led the Cardinals in rushing against the Cincinnati Bearcats in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl in Fenway Park. Louisville won the game 24-7 and Turner ran for 160 yards on 31 carries.

Last season, Turner had 62 carries for 284 yards and his first career touchdown. This season, he began the year as the starting running back but an ankle injury early on derailed his plans. He made a late-season return and saw some playing time – but it wasn’t what he was used to. Most recently, Turner rushed for 27 yards on five carries in Louisville’s 41-14 win over Kentucky.

For his career, Turner has 154 carries for 734 yards and two touchdowns. He’s also caught 24 passes for 167 yards.

His entrance into the transfer portal means he is unlikely to play in the Cardinals’ bowl game. Bowl bids will be announced Sunday night. While there are several options for Louisville, multiple sites have them slated for the Taxslayer Gator Bowl in Jacksonville.
