Get ready for a day of excitement in the skies and on the ground as the Wings & Things Festival and Fly-in returns to the Douglas Municipal Gene Chambers Airport on March 22. Hosted by Visit Douglas and the Douglas-Coffee County Chamber of Commerce, this family-friendly event will bring history to life with amazing aircraft, thrilling flight experiences, and plenty of fun for all ages.
This year’s lineup includes some incredible planes and helicopters that have played big roles in aviation history. The legendary UH-1 Huey helicopter and the classic PT-17 Stearman will be on display, along with the Commemorative Air Force Georgia’s PT-19 and T-34 planes.
The UH-1 Huey, one of the most famous helicopters ever built, has served in everything from combat missions during the Vietnam War to rescue and transport operations. Thanks to the Friends of Army Aviation (FOAA), visitors will get a chance to see this remarkable machine up close. To book a ride on the Huey, visit FOAA’s event page.
The PT-17 Stearman is another special highlight. This bright yellow biplane was a key trainer for World War II pilots—including right here in Douglas! Seeing it take flight is like stepping back in time. For information on booking a ride in the PT-17 Stearman, please call Stephanie at the Chamber of Commerce at 912-384-1873.
If you’ve ever wanted to fly in a historic aircraft, here’s your chance! Rides will be available in the Fairchild PT-19 Cornell and Beechcraft T-34 Mentor, two beautifully restored planes from CAF Airbase Georgia. You can book your ride in advance at Airbase Georgia’s event page or sign up at the event.
“Wings & Things is always a special event for Douglas,” says Stephanie Childers, Director of Tourism and Events for the Douglas-Coffee County Chamber of Commerce. “Whether you love history, airplanes, or just want to enjoy a great day with family, this festival has something for everyone.”
The volunteers behind these aircraft are passionate about sharing their history. “Keeping these planes flying takes a lot of work, but it’s worth it to see people experience them in person,” says a spokesperson for FOAA.
