On March 4, 2025, at approximately 4 p.m., a deputy responded to an animal cruelty call and found eight small dogs living in an old house that was covered in feces and urine.

According to a report from the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy arrived at the home at an Elzie Anderson Road address and heard multiple dogs in the home. The officer could also smell urine and feces from outside of the house. The deputy called animal control and the owners of the home.

The homeowner gave animal control and the deputy permission to enter the house. There they found the eight dogs living in feces, urine, and trash, according to the report. There was at least a foot of trash covering the floors of the entire home and all the windows were closed. The report states that “the smell was rancid.” The report also states that the dogs were skinny but appeared to have been being fed and watered.

The homeowner reported that he had been paying his son, Shane Tanner Jr., to take care of the dogs. He had even been buying food for Tanner to give to the dogs. The report states that Tanner had been giving the dogs the least amount of care, never taking them outside and never cleaning up after them.

Animal control removed the dogs from the house for the purpose of adoption. Tanner, 27, of Douglas, was arrested and charged with cruelty to animals. He was transported to the Coffee County Jail and later released on bond.
