A Coffee Correctional Facility employee was arrested and jailed on multiple charges after she allegedly reported for work smelling like marijuana.

According to a press release from the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, on March 10, 2025, deputies were dispatched to the Coffee Correctional Facility in Nicholls following reports from the onsite K-9 unit regarding an employee who arrived for duty with a strong odor of marijuana. The sergeant and K-9 handler on duty made contact with 22-year-old Norshaaliyah Carswell. Upon approaching her vehicle, the K-9 indicated a positive alert for the presence of drugs. This prompted the deputies to conduct a preliminary search of the vehicle’s interior, where they discovered a quantity of illegal substances.

As a result of the findings, Carswell was taken into custody and subsequently charged with possession of marijuana and crossing state or county guard lines with drugs without consent. She was later released on a bond set at $6,000. This occurrence is merely one of numerous incidents this year involving employees who have allegedly reported for work while impaired, smuggled illegal items into the facility, or possessed unlawful substances on the premises.
