The City of Douglas is excited to participate in Georgia Cities Week, which is sponsored by the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA). Approaching the 26th year of Georgia Cities Week, it offers a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our community’s achievements and recognize the hard work of both volunteers and city employees. Last year, over 160 cities, including Douglas, participated in various programs and events to honor this week dedicated to celebrating Georgia’s cities. This year’s celebration will take place from April 21 to April 26, 2025, and will include a variety of events. The theme for this year’s Georgia Cities Week is “Imagine the Possible.”

“We take great pride in our city and the services we provide to both residents and visitors,” said Mayor Tony Paulk. “Cities play a crucial role in delivering essential infrastructure and services that promote business growth and create opportunities for events that unite families and individuals within the community.”

Georgia Cities Week will kick off on April 21, 2025, will kick off with Spring Junk Free Week and Tire Amnesty Week, Monday, April 21, through Friday, April 25, between 8:30 am – 4:30 pm at 1011 Shirley Avenue (corner of Shirley and College Park Dr.).  For citizens within the city limits of Douglas, fees will be waived during this one week for big household and junk items including up to 4 tires per household.  Proof of residency, such as a utility bill, is required.  No commercial and no farm tires will be accepted.  Rubber only – no rims.  Citizens must provide a copy of their utility bill as proof of residency and be in line by 4:15 PM. FMI: (912)389-3450.

Here’s your chance to prove you know Douglas better than anyone!  The city’s Facebook page will be full of questions for Trivia Week relating to city services, projects, or famous people. For more information, call Blondale at (912) 383-0277.

The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council will meet on Monday, April 21, 2025, 5pm at City Hall. Join our youth leaders as they learn about more leadership within the community.

City Departments will host a Public Service Career Day with High School students during the week.  Students will tour each department, interact with city officials and staff, and learn about each department’s services to the community.

The Douglas Municipal Gene Chambers Airport will host the Georgia Airport Association’s Board of Directors meeting at City Hall on April 23, 2025. Hosting the board meeting will allow Douglas officials the opportunity to showcase our airport and community.

On Wednesday, April 23, the Coffee Alliance for Arts will host Munch and Music at Emma Ward Park at noon featuring Terry Bailey and Blair Bridwell.  Everyone is invited to bring their lunch or pre-order from the ChickFilA, and hear some great music.  For more information, visit Facebook @CoffeeAlliancefortheArts.

Heritage Station Museum will hold its monthly History At High Noon on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at 12 noon at 219 W. Ward Street. The topic will be one of Douglas’ long-time businesses, Williams Institutional.

The Douglas Police Department and Elliano’s will host a Coffee With A Cop on Thursday, April 24, 2025, from 8 AM to 10:30 AM, at Elliano’s located at 1351 Bowens Mill Rd. Join Douglas police officers and start a conversation about any of their new initiatives or programs. This will also be a unique opportunity for citizens to talk with officers one-on-one about any concerns in the community. Contact Cpl. Rigo Victoria for more information about this event at (912) 384-2222.

Douglas Fire Department is partnering with Chick-fil-A for the Touch-The-Truck Event on Thursday, April 24, 2025, from 5 PM to 7 PM. Bring the kids and let them learn about fire safety while climbing in the fire trucks and meeting our DFD Firefighters. Sparky the Fire Pup will be on hand to offer free hugs and ice cream to children. For more information, call (912) 384-4815.

The Greatest American Cleanup will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, 9 AM – 12Noon. Volunteers should meet at City Hall, and then groups will journey to areas in Douglas as identified by the KDB Litter Index.  Cleanup will take place at 9 AM and last until Noon.  Volunteers are needed; this is an excellent opportunity for clubs, organizations, churches, businesses, and individuals to roll up their sleeves and earn community service hours by keeping Douglas beautiful. For more information, call Alyssa at (912) 383-0277.

For information on Georgia Cities Week activities, please call Blondale at (912)383-0277, email bthomas@cityofdouglasga.gov, or visit www.cityofdouglasga.gov.
