As Independence Day approaches, the City of Douglas is here to remind citizens to use caution during celebrations with safety, courtesy, and care, especially when it comes to using fireworks. Fireworks are allowed from 10 AM to 9 PM, with an extended window on July 3-4 from 9 PM to 11:59 PM. The use of fireworks indoors is a definite NO, and it’s against the law to ignite them on roadways, near city/county properties, or within 100 yards of hospitals or nursing homes. Also, you must be at least 18 years old to buy, possess, or ignite fireworks.

“We want everyone to celebrate safely,” says Douglas Fire Chief Casey Wright. “Fireworks can be fun, but they also pose risks. Let’s ensure that everyone enjoys the festivities without accidents or fires.”

Here are a few fireworks safety tips:

  • Be Responsible – Always have a sober adult in charge of the fireworks.
  • Keep Kids Safe – Sparklers may seem harmless but never give them to young children.
  • Shop Smart – Only purchase fireworks from licensed retailers with clear safety labels.
  • Stay Safe – Keep spectators at a safe distance and always wear safety glasses when igniting fireworks.
  • Use Caution – Light only one firework at a time and never attempt to relight a malfunctioning one.
  • Dispose of Properly – After use, soak fireworks in water and store them safely in a covered trash can.

“While citizens are having fun with fireworks, let’s not forget about neighbors,” DPD Chief Brannen Pruette. “Remember, fireworks can trigger PTSD in some individuals, especially veterans. Please be considerate of those around you during your celebrations.”

Fireworks can be frightening for pets—studies show that 1 in 5 pets go missing after being startled by loud noises. Keep your pets indoors during fireworks displays, ensure proper identification, and consider boarding them if you are out during the festivities.  Coffee Cause for Paws is offering a microchip event on Saturday, June 28, 2025, 10 am-2 pm at Tractor Supply-Douglas, if a pet owner would like their pet to be microchipped to help bring a pet home if lost.

Make this 4th of July a memorable occasion for all the right reasons, celebrate responsibly, stay safe, and enjoy the fireworks!
