The CCA Lady Patriots scored early but they didn’t score often in their 8-0 win over Terrell Academy in their home opener Tuesday afternoon. Like Saturday’s season opener, this game only went five innings.
The Lady Patriots only needed one inning to jump out front and stay there. They scored all eight of their runs in the bottom of the first and held Terrell scoreless for the remainder of the game to invoke the eight-run mercy rule after five.
With nobody out and the bases loaded in the first, Mattie Lewis walked to score Brilynn Waldron. Klair Mercer singled to score Emma Gourley and Lily Waldron, who was pinch running for Gracie Giddens. Peighton Harper followed with a double, driving in Lewis and putting CCA up 4-0. Terrell Academy retired the next two batters. Then the Lady Patriots rallied again for four more runs with two outs. Arrabelle Roberts singled and advanced to second on the throw; Bleu Carter scored in the process. Brilynn Waldron doubled for her second hit of the inning. Harper and Roberts scored to put CCA ahead 7-0. The eighth and final run of the inning (and game) came when Brilynn scored on a Gourley single.
Giddens started and made the most of the opportunity her offense gave her. She threw a 66-pitch complete game, striking out three and walking two. She surrendered just one hit.
Brilynn Waldron had three hits while Gourley had two. Brilynn and Mercer also drove in two each.
The Lady Patriots are 2-0 on the season and have yet to play past the fifth inning. Next up are the Wayne County Lady Yellow Jackets, who come to Douglas Friday for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
